Purpose: Use this article to configure the Schedule area of a Course Template.
The Schedule tab defines the standard delivery pattern for a course. It is where you configure the sessions that make up the course and the typical sequence in which they are delivered.
The schedule defined here acts as the structural template for Events created from the Course Template. When a new Event is scheduled, these sessions can be copied into the Event so administrators only need to assign dates and finalize the delivery plan.
For the broader Course Template model and navigation across all tabs, see Understanding Course Templates.
In this article
What the Schedule tab controls
- the session structure of the course
- the order in which sessions are delivered
- the number of sessions required to complete the course
- the default framework inherited by Events
How course schedules are used
The Course Template schedule represents the standard structure for delivering the training. This structure is copied when a new Event is created, allowing administrators to quickly generate a delivery schedule.
Once the Event exists, administrators typically adjust session dates, times, and instructor assignments in the Event’s Outline tab.
Note
Changes made to the Course Template schedule affect future Events created from the template. Existing Events keep the session structure that was copied when they were created.
Creating a course schedule
When building a Course Template, define the sessions that make up the course and the order in which they occur.
- Open the Course Template.
- Navigate to the Schedule tab.
- Add a new session or schedule component.
- Enter the name or description of the session.
- Repeat for each session required for the course.
- Save the template.
Once the schedule is defined, administrators can use it as the baseline structure when scheduling Events.
Session structure
Each session represents a block of training delivery. Depending on the course, sessions may represent training days, modules, workshops, or other delivery components.
Examples of session structures include:
- multi-day instructor-led training
- modular programs delivered over several sessions
- courses consisting of multiple workshops
The Schedule tab defines the structure, while the Event determines the exact dates and delivery details.
Template schedule vs Event schedule
The Course Template schedule defines the reusable structure of the course, while the Event schedule defines the real delivery plan.
- Course Template schedule defines the standard session structure for the course.
- Event schedule defines when those sessions actually occur.
If the curriculum structure changes, update the Course Template. If the dates change for a specific delivery, update the Event instead.
When to update the schedule
Administrators typically update the Schedule tab when:
- a course gains new instructional sessions
- the course structure changes
- modules are added or removed
- the training program is redesigned
Best practices
- Define the course session structure before scheduling Events.
- Use consistent naming for sessions across similar courses.
- Review the template schedule when the curriculum changes.
- Confirm the Event schedule after sessions are copied into a new Event.
